PROGRAM FEATURES...

May 22 - Stratford Rotary did not have a lunch meeting today. Our annual Spring Social was held at
6:30 p.m. at Old Town club. We also celebrated Stratford Rotary’s 35th birthday. There were approximately 160 people in attendance. A lot of old familiar faces were there that night. Some of our former charter members and past presidents attended the party. Stratford Rotary honored the living charter members, Doug Leckie, Ted Bowen, Joe Dudley, and Curtis Long. Art Blackwood was not able to be there. President Tom Eshelman also recognized the 22 of our past 35 presidents who attended. Tom was very upset with himself for leaving out a very important person. Jim Haley, who served as president for the year ‘77-‘78, was there but was not recognized. Sorry Jim, please forgive us. We gave Doug Leckie a very special recognition, a Paul Harris Fellow, since he is the only remaining active charter member. The food was great, the fellowship wonderful and a great time was had by all.

May 29 - Our speaker today was Dr. Authur Christakos, Duke Medical School Professor and a Past Rotary District Governor. Dr. Christakos entertained us today with a talk about “Laughter and Healing”. He related stories and jokes demonstrating the healing power of laughter. He talked about his experiences as a Rotary District Governor. Thank you Dr. Christakos for a very enlightening talk and good advice. This was a perfect talk on the 100th birthday of Bob Hope.

DATES TO REMEMBER:
June 26 - Board Meeting with Assistant District Governor

OF INTEREST...................

Please remember Robert Harper in your thoughts and prayers. Robert had hip replacement surgery on Thursday, May 22. Nancy said he is doing well. Continue to remember Richard Bell and Buford Edwards as they recuperate at home.

AND THE WINNER IS.........after the votes were tallied, the winner of the Centennial Project is a children’s play yard. The project will be completed in the year 2005. A dollar amount will be decided when we know if Winston-Salem Rotary will be joining us in the project. Thanks to the Centennial committee for all their hard work on selecting projects for us to consider.

PLEASE, PLEASE............bring your account up to date. I need everyone to settle their accounts before June 15, 2003! Our year ends June 30 but I need to collect all accounts by the 15th so I can send the Foundation pledges in by the 20th so we get credit for this year. I think some of you have a misconception as to what we do with the money. Rotary International requires $100 per member to be sent to the Rotary Foundation. I bill everyone $200 a year ($50 per quarter). $100 goes directly to the Rotary Foundation and the other $100 stays with our club to fund our scholarship and enrichments programs. We depend on other fundraisers (i.e. auction, raffle) to fund any other program we are involved in. I won’t list names, but there a few members who have not paid any benevolence the entire year!!!!!!! Please ask yourself why. Supporting our international and community outreach is part of being a Rotarian. I hope everyone will send in their donations so we can be a 100% Sustaining Member club. We are one of a few clubs that is not.

May 29 Board Minutes...President Tom Eshelman called the meeting to order. The April minutes were read and approved. Scott Krewson reviewed the new Focus on the Family program that will include fun activities for members and their families. The goal is to increase camaraderie. Annette Lunch send a report that her committee made to approve $1300 for summer honors art programs at Sawtooth and $1605 for 3 full time students and transportation for the WS/FC public school summer enrichment program. The requests were approved. Robert Nichols presented the financials and the proposed budgets. Some areas were increased to better serve our membership. All financials and budgets were approved. A discussion of benevolent contributions took place. It was agreed that the membership needs more information and a better understanding of what their benevolence dollars accomplish. Tom presented a review of the accomplishments of the 2002-2003 year. Loy thanked him for a job well done. Loy reviewed the committee assignments for the incoming leadership. Ed Robbins will be at our next board meeting acting as Assistant District Governor on June 26 at 11:30. All future board meetings will be at 11:45. Meeting adjourned at 12:30 p.m.
