PROGRAM FEATURES...

July 31 - Richard Burr was our speaker today. He spoke on three critical issues:
1. The Economy: Talked about the tax reform that has taken place. Stated that Job creation was not as good as hoped but thought we would see significant gain in the 3rd and 4th qtrs. of this year. Talked about the significant impact the job losses in the textile industry will have on NC.
2. Terrorism
: Great Progress. Talked about renewed threat to US. Expressed concern that information regarding the lack of required Visa for foreign travelers traveling through the US was leaked to the media setting off this latest terrorism alert.
3. Domestic Policy: Talked at length about efforts to establish energy policy for next 10 years. Also talked a great deal about prescription drug bill. Stated that if great improvements aren’t made in our health care system over the next 10 years, we could see the system as we know it “implode”. He also talked about the need to deter tort actions which he feels are directly responsible for inflation in our health care costs. Thanks to Jay Luke for this write-up.

August 7 - Marie Cockerham, Hospice & Palliative Carecenter, was our speaker today. Their mission statement, “Hospice & Palliative Carecenter is committed to providing quality medical, emotional, spiritual and social support to patients and families who face a serious illness - regardless of diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment”, says it all. Marie talked about what “palliative care” means. She used the story of a former patient to show how they touch all aspects of a patient’s life.

August 14 - David Sanders with the Winston-Salem Utilities Department was our speaker today. He talked about the different pumping stations and the demands they have on them. Our highest demand has been 69 million gallons a day and we have a potential of 72 million gallons. Although we have never run out of water, the demand has been too close for comfort, hence there is a need another pumping station. Winston-Salem has the lowest residential water rate of any major city in North Carolina. David believes even with a new station there will be a minimal financial impact for residents.

White House Recognizes Leadership, Accomplishments of EPA’s Chief Financial Officer, Linda M. Combs:

July 25, 2003
In a ceremony this morning in Washington at the Environmental Protection Agency the White House recognized EPA’s achievements in improving financial performance and promoting the President’s Management Agenda for government reform.

Clay Johnson III, Deputy Director for Management in the Office of Management and Budget commended EPA CFO Linda M. Combs for leading the Agency to develop timely and accurate financial information and for using it to make management decisions.

Mr. Johnson singled out EPA as “the kind of agency citizens can be proud of” based on its having embraced the management reform Agenda President George W. Bush introduced in August 2001.

This month EPA became only the third agency in government-after the National Science Foundation and the Social Security Administration-to earn a top “green” rating for
progress in financial performance.

Speaking before a large group of EPA employees, Johnson identified four essential steps for managerial success and praised Linda Combs and her staff for implementing all of them.
