18 - Meeting at Bethabara PROGRAM FEATURES............ November 13 - Our own Scott Wierman, President, Winston-Salem Foundation, brought us a wonderful program today. Scott talked about the successes and future plans of the Foundation. Some of the topics Scott discussed were the ECHO Fund, Millennium Fund, Social Capital and its benefits, and Robert Putnam’s Social Capital Benchmark Survey. Thank you Scott for all you do for our community. November 20 - Bob Forney, CEO and President, America's Second Harvest Food Bank and Nan Holbrook Griswold, Executive Director, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, brought us a very important and timely message today. At Thanksgiving time we are thankful for all the blessings we have received, but what about the poor and hungry? Hunger is a problem that’s largely ignored in a land of plenty, but a hard reality for the 200,000 people living in poverty in northwest North Carolina. Second Harvest Food Bank’s ministry is to reduce hunger and malnutrition in northwest North Carolina. They are committed to 1) acquiring and distributing food to supplement the food needs of faith and community-based organizations; 2) advocating for the rights of hungry people; 3) educating the public about hunger; and 4) pursuing partnerships with like-minded organizations. The organization has started such programs as Kids Café and Second Helpings. Their motto, “Sharing the abundance so no one goes hungry" says it all. Thank you Mr. Forney and Ms. Griswold for your caring and concern for our poor. WHAT AN AWESOME NIGHT!! Thank you is hardly enough to say to Chris Douglas and her committee and President Loy McGill for all their hard work and everything they did to make Stratford Rotary’s Holiday Social and Silent Auction a huge success. The day started off doubtful because of the weather, but the night ended up superb. The food was wonderful, music fun, speaker awesome and the silent auction terrific! Also, a big thank you to all members and vendors who donated items for the silent auction. It looks like we raised approximately $7,000 from the auction. Just think of all the good things we can do with the dollars raised and you helped by donating or purchasing items. A special thank you to Earline King for her early donation of a sculpture to our silent auction. Her generous and inspirational gift got the auction off to a great start. We also want to thank Kathy Acton for her suggestion and coordination of the toy drive. I don’t know how many toys were brought in; however, I do know every table had at least four to five toys on it. Your support of this endeavor was heart warming. Many children in our area, who might not have otherwise, will enjoy a very happy holiday this year. Helping our children is what it is all about. Stratford Rotary definitely “Lent A Hand”. One of the highlights of the evening was when President Loy presented a Paul Harris Award to our Rotarian of the Year. This year’s recipient is Annette Lynch. Annette is Vice President, Donor Services for The Winston-Salem Foundation and is very active and involved in the community. Annette has been a member of Stratford Rotary since August 2000. In the three years Annette has been a member, she has been a faithful member, a member of the Board of Directors, chairperson of the Benevolence and Scholarship program and is the current Program chairperson. Annette exemplifies Service Above Self and we congratulate her on this award. 2003-2004 Board, Officers, and Committee Chairs
