Now is the time to mark your calendars for the fantastic 2004 District 7690 Conference being held on April 22-25 at the beautiful Renaissance Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville in the spring.... what could be better? See all that Asheville has to offer and enjoy the fellowship of Rotarians from across District 7690. The natural beauty of the mountains, where altitude affects attitude, is an inviting place to learn what Rotary is doing in our District and around the world. Asheville offers unique shopping, arts and crafts, and local attractions such as the Biltmore Estate, Chimney Rock Park, and outdoor adventure. Bring the entire family and celebrate the Family of Rotary. There is something to do for the entire family. Meet us in the mountains!

From President Loy McGill:

I hope you enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the season and celebrated family, friends and community. Without a doubt, the most important gifts you give are those gifts of self. As Rotarians, our gifts of time come in many packages; Rotary committee work, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, volunteering with local non-profit agencies, schools, civic clubs and city-wide programs for the less fortunate.

As I reflect on the many blessings of this season, I am thankful for the guiding wisdom of Assistant District Governor, Ed Robbins, President Elect, Charlie Chatham, past President Tom Eshelman and your Board of Directors. These Rotarians and other committee chairs work diligently to promote the ideals of Rotary and to make this club strong. I’m also especially thankful for our executive secretary Margaret Warren who works tirelessly on our behalf!

Regardless of your faith tradition, we, as Rotarians, share a common belief that by placing service above self, we can improve our communities and affect dramatic change. Rotary’s emphasis on world peace and understanding, and on improvements in poverty, hunger, education and health are ideals that unite all of us worldwide. Thanks for your commitment and dedication to improving our community through your actions. Truly, you are “lending a hand” and helping craft the future for individuals locally and internationally. Your support of Rotary and its programs are one of the best gifts you can give.

Happy Holidays!

A Message from Kathy Acton:

I wish everyone could have been with us when we took the toys to the Christmas Toy Shop. We had two cars LOADED with toys–books, puzzles, stuffed animals, dolls, trucks, games–anything a young child would love to see under the tree on Christmas morning. The ladies at the Toy Shop were thrilled to see all the bags and boxes of NEW toys. They provide toys for over 1000 children from ages 1-12. They are in the same building as the Christmas Cheer Clearing House, which gets referrals from DSS, the hospitals, and the kidney centers. They provide food, clothing and toys for entire families in need. Thank you to everyone who brought a toy to the Holiday Social!

Sorry Scott!!

In the last bulletin I forgot to say thank you to Scott Krewson for orchestrating our Family of Rotary outing to Raylen Winery. The event was well attended and everyone enjoyed the fellowship, wine and tour!

New Stratford Rotary Benevolence Fund

In December, Stratford Rotary board members approved the establishment of an advised fund at The Winston-Salem Foundation to ensure the tax deductibility of contributions made to the Benevolence Fund. Previously, checks written to Stratford Rotary, even though made for charitable purposes, have not been deductible gifts to a nonprofit organization.

Margaret Warren will continue to collect payment of dues and benevolence contributions, although members are encouraged to write separate checks for the gifts payable either to Stratford Rotary Benevolence Fund or to The Winston-Salem Foundation for the Benevolence Fund so that gifts will be fully deductible. Gifts of $250 or more will be acknowledged for tax purposes; all other gifts less than $250 will use cancelled checks as their receipt. The Foundation charges no fee for administration of this fund.

The Stratford Rotary Benevolence Fund will continue to support scholarships and enrichment activities for children and youth as determined by the Benevolence Committee. We encourage you to consider the importance of Stratford Rotary’s charitable role in our community and continue to make your generous benevolence contributions to this new fund.

PROGRAM FEATURES............

December 4 - I talked about our wonderful Holiday Social and Silent Auction in the last bulletin, but I forgot to highlight two outstanding people. A special thank you to Earline King for her early donation of a sculpture to our silent auction. Her generous and inspirational gift got the auction off to a great start. Ham Horton wowed the crowd with his remarks. Ham shared the story of our community’s beginnings and attendees heard how our town grew and prospered through the decades. Now celebrating our 250th anniversary, this community continues to thrive, thanks in no small part to the actions of dedicated Rotarians. A natural orator, Ham held the crown spellbound as he shared our history. At night’s end, many members were overheard saying, “I could have listened to Ham all night! What a program!”

December 11 - The speaker today was Dale Page, BB&T Capital Marketing. His topic was “A Look Ahead." Mr. Page gave a very interesting talk and highlighted stock market trends relative to historic events.

December 18 - Today was a wonderful day. We held our meeting at Historic Bethabara. After a wonderful lunch of BBQ provided by Pig Pickins, we went to the old church and learned some Moravian history and had a traditional Moravian Lovefeast of coffee and lovefeast buns
