his monthly message, President Jonathan Majiyagbe wrote about the fourth
object of Rotary: “The advancement of international understanding,
goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional
persons united in the ideal of service.” How appropriate as February
is World Understanding Month. A number of our programs give us opportunities to act as goodwill ambassadors contributing to the creation of a more understanding, more tolerant world for us all. These include the many programs of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation; Group Study Exchange, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Matching Grants, Friendship Exchange, World Community Service, Youth Exchange and the Rotary World Peach Scholars program. The RI president reminds us that Rotarians believe and know that educational exchange and humanitarian service makes a difference. Dates To Remember: Dates To Remember: March
11 - Board Meeting at 11:45 PROGRAM FEATURES............ February 12 - Today we had our annual Valentine’s Day special. We had 26 spouses or guests with us today. Our speaker, Dr. Michael Kutcher, Associate Professor of Cardiology at WFU Baptist Medical Center and Director of Interventional Cardiology, brought us a lighthearted talk about our hearts. He addressed a serious subject with a flair. February 19 - Jay Banks, Station Manager, WFDD, took us for a walk down memory lane recounting the history of the radio station and its start. It was founded in 1946 in the town of Wake Forest and moved to Winston-Salem in 1966 playing mostly classical and pop music. It reaches out to all surrounding counties today with more listeners and contributions from Guilford County than from Forsyth County. February 26 - Our speaker today was Phil Archer with Reynolda House. Mr. Archer showed slides of the construction of Reynolda House and talked about how it arrived where it is today. Thank you for a very interesting program. Happy Birthday: Nick

MAKEUPS:
Minutes From February 19 Board Meeting: The Board voted to accept the resignation of Melissa Combes. The Board also voted to make Cantey Alexander an Honorary Member in lieu of accepting his resignation. Sue Carson reported that she had only received 7 pictures for the website. Margaret will continue to put in the bulletin the request and send emails prior to the meetings asking members to bring pictures. Scott Krewson reported that we are looking into a joint family outing with the other Rotary Clubs at Bethabara on a weekend or evening in the spring. Bobby Sprinkle reported that the Interact Club is in formation at Forsyth Country Day School and that applications for Rotary Youth Leadership Camp are being accepted from public schools. The deadline is February 19th and interviews will take place on March 9. Chris Douglas reported that almost 100 books were donated to the Forest Park Elementary School from our book drive at the Valentines Luncheon. Members reported their satisfaction with this type of campaign in lieu of flower arrangements at socials. Annette Lynch reported that programming has been scheduled thru June. We will have a joint meeting with Downtown in June to hear Ken Thompson and we have the opportunity to have another joint meeting in May to hear Cathy Cronkite, Walter Cronkite’s daughter. Loy McGill presented a fundraising opportunity to pair with Barnes and Nobles and receive a discount and proceeds from purchases in the spring. More information to follow. MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT: It’s the season of love and giving from the heart. How appropriate that we all got together to enjoy warm fellowship, if not warm weather, and celebrated Valentines and the Family of Rotary. Special thanks to Chris Douglas, Fellowship chair, and her committee for orchestrating the Valentine luncheon. Also, thanks to Audrey Bailey for coordinating the book drive initiative. Your gifts of books will make a difference in the lives of the children at Forest Park Elementary. In addition to enhancing the literary offerings at the school, the books will also give the teachers additional titles to use as teaching resources. Thank you for “lending a hand” with your generous gifts. Our thanks also to business partners in this book initiative: Barnes and Noble, Borders and Hatch. The discounts offered by the retailers and the wholesale prices extended to us by Hatch, enables us to spread our dollars more effectively and buy more books! As you looked at our book centerpieces, I hope that you reflected on the joy that books have given you and know that, that same experience will be reflected on the faces of children at Forest Park as they take trips, climb mountains, conquer fears, step back in time,...all without ever leaving a chair. If you didn’t have an opportunity to purchase books and would like to take part, just give a donation and we will see that additional books are purchased! Please help us..... We need your picture on our website. Please bring a photo (formal or good clear candid) to the next meeting and give it to Margaret with your name on the back (we’ll return it) OR email a JPEG (.jpg) to suekcarson@aol.com. Having the pictures will help us get to know each other better. FAMILY OF ROTARY DAY AT THE NC ZOO… Join in the fun of the first District 7690 Family of Rotary Day at the NC Zoo April 3rd from 9:00 to 5:00. Bring the whole family and enjoy a wonderful time at the zoo. Registration begins at 8:30 am at the North America Entrance where you will pick up your tickets for the zoo and for a picnic lunch at the Oak Hill Picnic Area near the Africa Entrance. All participants must pre-register so your tickets will be ready for you at the registration table. Prices are $12 for adults and $10 for children. Price includes a picnic lunch. See Margaret for registration and more information. CONGRATULATIONS… Congratulations to Ken Bell, son of our own Richard Bell, for his work in prosecuting a group of smugglers tied to an organization of Islamic fundamentalist terrorists called Hezbollah. No group, at that time, had murdered more Americans. Ken received national recognition in the February 2004 issue of Reader's Digest. Get it and read it! 2003-2004 Board, Officers, and Committee Chairs
