PROGRAM FEATURES............

March 4 - Our own Bob Coil, President, Piedmont HomeHealth, Inc., brought us a very insightful message about a very cruel disease, “Alzheimer’s”. He gave us some staggering statistics such as: An estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease.; By 2050, the number of Americans with Alzheimer’s could range from 11.3 million to 16 million, with a middle estimate of 13.2 million.; Increasing age is the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s. One in 10 individuals over 65 and nearly half of those over 85 are affected.; National direct and indirect annual costs for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease are at least $100 billion, according to estimates used by the Alzheimer’s Association and the National Institute on Aging.; More than 7 out of 10 people with Alzheimer’s disease live at home, where almost 75 percent of their care is provided by family and friends. The care giver suffers the most because the patient does not know what is going on. Researchers have found that aromatherapy and music help to manage patients.

March 11 - Cary McMillan, CEO of Sara Lee Branded Apparel and Executive Vice President of Sara Lee Corporation spoke to us today. He talked about dealing with the economy and outsourcing. He addressed the competition in the world today and how the world perceives the United States. When the world thinks of unfair trading, they think of the US. Trade relations are not about free trade, they are about gaining trust.

MESSAGE FROM OUR INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT:

I have been overwhelmed by the response to Ade’s Hope Fund for the Education of Women and Children. The expressions of love for Ade and the desire to honor her memory through this special initiative have meant more to me and my family than I can express. I have come to appreciate more than ever the importance of the Family of Rotary.

I have just learned that the first projects using money from Ade’s Hope Fund have been approved by the Foundation Trustees. Because of your contribution, educational materials will go to needy children in Argentina, musical instruments will be given to children in Mexico and indigent children in the Philippines will receive support. Each project approved from this fund will receive a copy of the enclosed statement, indicating that funding for the project is coming from this special source.

These projects represent only the beginning of a legacy of caring that your gift has made possible. I know that Ade would be pleased and proud to know that such projects are being made possible because of your generosity and willingness to Lend a Hand in her memory.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for your generous contributions to Ade’s Hope Fund. I hope you are as pleased as I am to know that these fund are being put to work to help educate women and children around the world.

Kind regards,
Jonathan B. Majiyagbe
President, Rotary International
