PROGRAM FEATURES............

March 18 - Tim Janke, Regional Director of Small Business Technology Development Center spoke to us today. He addressed the issue of revitalizing the downtown area; how many times has this been tried and why does he think it will work this time? Mr. Janke presented the Angels Program. This program is made up of wealthy individuals who want to invest for the good of the community not for gain. The money is used for startup funding for new business. This is the piece of the puzzle that has been missing to make the revitalization work.

March 25 - George Bryan, Executive Director of Exchange/SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) brought us a very important message today. Our children are in crisis. As a community we need to do something. Our children are being abused and neglected. Child abuse is the mistreatment of a child up to age 18 by a parent or guardian, which results in injury or harm. There are three types of abuse: physical, emotional, and sexual. Neglect of a child is the lack of proper care or supervision by a parent or guardian. This includes abandonment, lack of adequate supervision and/or failure to provide adequate food, shelter, clothing and medical care. Children who are abused or neglected will often show signs of anxiety, depression, withdrawal, aggressive behavior, physical pain, and/or large mood swings. This is everyone’s problem. Child abuse and neglect sow seeds of violence in the community, costs tax dollars and, destroys the lives of families and children. Mr. Bryan showed some very disturbing, but very real pictures of abused children. There is help in our community for these families. We can help too by volunteering, making financial contributions, helping to raise awareness, or reaching out to a needy family by offering to take the kids for a little while, providing them with a meal, or passing on our hand-me-downs. Our concern and caring will make an impact on a family that feels hopeless.

MESSAGE FROM OUR INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT:

Polio lab opens in Pakistan as 35 million immunized.

U.S. Rotarian Dr. Otto Austel, a past district governor and volunteer polio surveillance expert, helps treat a patient while on a mission in Pakistan.

Your dollars were at work during National Immunization Days in Pakistan, 2-5 September 2003. Rotary Foundation Trustee Fumio Tamamura and local Rotarians attended a launch near Islamabad, the national capital.

“The government of Pakistan procured 75 million doses of oral polio vaccine through the generous donations of our international partners in polio eradication,” said Dr. Rehan Hafeez, national manager of the Expanded Programme of Immunization, speaking at the launch.

As many as half a million people, including health workers, volunteers, and the country’s armed forces, were directly or indirectly involved in the mobilization, coordination, and execution of the door-to-door campaign.

Afghanistan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Somalia, and Sudan were among the countries in which immunization activities took place.

Kind regards,
Jonathan B. Majiyagbe
President, Rotary International
