ANNOUNCEMENTS,
NEWS & INFORMATION................
Mark
your calendars for two upcoming events. First, we will be hosting an event
at Sci Works for all the area Rotary clubs. The museum will be open, a
meal will be catered, and there will be wonderful socializing with fellow
Rotarians and their families. This event will take place on Friday
evening, May 21, from 5:30 to 8:30. Secondly, our annual Spring Social
will be held on Tuesday evening, June 22, at Forsyth Country Club.
We moved the social to June so as not to conflict with the area outing.
There will be more details on both events later.
Our
Deepest Sympathy to
Ellen Stockton on the death of her father. I omitted this from the last
bulletin. Ellen’s father, Ralph M. Stockton, Jr., passed away on
March 26. Mr. Stockton was a member of the Winston-Salem Rotary Club.
Dates
To Remember:
May
13 - District Assembly
May 13 - Board Meeting 11:45
May 21 - Family of Rotary outing with area Rotary Clubs at Sci Works
June 22 - Spring Social at Forsyth Country Club
PROGRAM FEATURES............

22 - Our speaker today was Paul Wiles, President and CEO Novant since
1997. He spoke about the changing healthcare environment. 63% of healthcare
costs are currently paid for or sponsored by some government agency. 43%
of hospitals have negative margins. He commented on the complexities of
the healthcare industry and how the current liabilities and risks that
doctors face are causing a drop in the number of doctors who are willing
to treat high risk patients.
Novant
currently employees 7298 people in the Triad region. They plan to spend
205 million on capital projects over the next 5 years, including a new
emergency department and new ICU center. The work on the North Pavilion
is to begin in early 2005. Paul said that the addition of the North Pavilion,
a nine story tower, will dramatically change the current landscape at
Forsyth Medical Center. He also stated that we would see the evolution
of parking decks on the grounds as well.
Even
with all the negative factors effecting the healthcare industry, Paul
was upbeat that the state of the healthcare system of Novant is good.

29 - Thanks to Ellen Stockton and Mike Dixon for sharing their classification
talks with us today. They both humored us and intrigued us with the trails
their lives have taken. Interestingly, they both started their work careers
at Wachovia but ended up in totally different areas. Ellen is in Gift
Planning at Novant and Mike is the Headmaster at Salem Baptist Christian
School. Ellen and Mike are both fairly new members of Stratford Rotary
but both have jumped in with both feet and are willing to contribute to
the growth and ongoing success of Stratford Rotary. They have both accepted
positions in next year’s leadership. Thank you both for your talks
and for your support of our club.
