are welcome. We would especially like for anyone with vacation homes to donate
some time.
BOARD MEETING MINUTES. The Board met on October 28. At a previous Board
Meeting the subject of having a bike race for a fund raiser was brought up.
Gary Fleming and Ken Putnam, owner of Ken's Bike Shop attended the meeting
to address the Board with some information and figures on sponsoring a bike
race. Jimmy Flythe mentioned that the Spartanburg Rotary has an extremely
successful bike race every year. Jimmy said that he would try to get some
information on the Spartanburg program and report at our next board meeting.***
Vernon Ferrell made a report on the Centennial Project. He is working with
Burke Systems to negotiate a good price for the quality line of products that
they provide. He thinks we will need $14-18 thousand dollars to have a significant
Centennial Project. Vernon mentioned that we need to set aside enough money
to purchase a nice plaque to go on the playground.*** Ellen Stockton
reported on a request for a joint meeting with the Chamber of Commerce. She
is going to get all of the details including costs and report at the next
meeting.*** Kathy Acton reported on the progress of the auction and
she encouraged board members to donate and she emphasized that we need vacation
homes for this important fund raiser.***
New membership proposal was presented and approved (see your emailed or mailed newsletter for this information).
Our Deepest Sympathy goes out to the family of Bob
Jeffords. For those of you who have done make ups at Clemmons Rotary, you will
remember that Bob was a dedicated Rotarian and served as their club secretary
for a number of years. Bob suffered a fatal heart attack and passed away Tuesday
evening, November 2, 2004. He will be greatly
missed.
PROGRAM
FEATURES............
October 21 - Today we had a very
enlightening and entertaining program. Noel Grady-Smith spoke to us on Dance
Education in Public Schools. Ms. Grady-Smith is a very talented and hightly
recognized teach of the arts. She teaches at Mineral Springs Middle School. She
brought some of her students with her today to give us a demonstration. Mineral
Springs is an Equity Plus School. Students who want to be in this Dance Focus
program must have good grades and exemplary behavior. Ms. Grady-Smith explained
how dance and music are used to help teach history, math, and there are lots of
different ways to live life. The arts is a huge umbrella that rescues children
and teaches them to express who they are. Her students are currently studying
Native Americans. They performed Native American dances and an authentic piece
they put together themselves. Thank you Ms Grady-Smith for an excellent program
and for being a fabulous teacher.
October 28 - Stratford Rotary
enjoyed a delightful and insightful talk on Vocation by our own John Shields.
John has had four different careers over his professional lifetime and feels
that as a parish priest, he is now where he is supposed to be. He talked about
the personal understanding that he has gotten looking back on each of his
careers. Each experience helped him grow into the next stage of life. He
encouraged each of us to use our own professional experiences in meaningful
ways.
