PROGRAM FEATURES............
December 9 - OUR HOLIDAY SOCIAL WAS A TREMENDOUS
SUCCESS!
We made over $10,400 on the auction! The mink coat was found!!!
Thanks to everybody who made our Holiday Social a success.
Special Thanks to Loy McGill who spent many hours of work on the auction. Others
who helped set up the auction included Mary McCandless, Ellen Stockton, Trisha
Chatham, Margaret Warren, and Mike Dixon and his committee. We sincerely appreciate
the work that Kathy Acton did in getting the social and auction under way.
Thanks to the major contributors including: Earline King, Carl Deaton, Ed Robbins,
Loy McGill, Trisha Chatham, and Ellen Stockton. Most of our members worked so
hard and contributed so much to make this event a success.
Where will the funds raised at the Holiday Auction go?
Fund raised from the auction will primarily be used to cover the cost of our
Centennial Project which is a play ground for children in Winston-Salem. The
city of Winston-Salem will provide the land for this project and Stratford Rotary
will have a play ground built on the property. The cost of this project is estimated
to be over $16,000. Half of this money will be from funds raised in 2003 and
2004. We raised enough money to complete this project at the 2004 Holiday Auction.
Vernon Ferrell, III who has had a great deal of experience in planning play
grounds for different projects is Chairman of the Rotary Centennial Project.
Thanks for the toys and books you brought. Where did the books and toys go?
The toys and books that you brought to the Holiday were donated to several agencies
in Winston-Salem for needy and deserving children. The toys were distributed
by SCAN for disadvantaged children in our community who are victims of child
abuse or are at risk. Some of the toys were donated to Amos Cottage for use
with their children. Books were added to the library at our partner school,
Kimberly Park Elementary.
Thanks, Charlie Chatham
Rotarian of the Year
Ellen Stockton received the Rotarian of the Year Award for her outstanding service
as Program Chairman. Under Ellen’s leadership, the Program Committee has
brought outstanding speakers to Stratford Rotary during 2004. The Mental Health
Association said that the Kathy Cronkite program was the most successful and
best attended program they have had. Loy McGill planted the seed to start the
Cronkite program and Ellen made it happen for Stratford Rotary. Ellen generously
contributed both time and wonderful auction items to the Holiday Auction. Congratulations
to Ellen Stockton who was named our most recent Paul Harris Fellow.
THANK YOU NOTE FROM AMOS COTTAGE
Dear Participating Rotary Members.
I would like to take this opportunity to formally thank each of you for your
holiday donation to the special children at the Amos Cottage Therapeutic Day
Program. We plan to use the donated toys to replenish our Behavior Toy Store.
On Tuesdays, if the child has displayed "positive behavior" he earns a visit
to the "Store". I have to admit, many of our children have been extra god during
the month of December in anticipation of Santa's arrival so our shelves have
looked a little vacant. The timing of your donation was perfect! Thank you for
putting a smile on the face of a child who is experiencing a little difficulty
in their present live. On behalf of the children at the Amos Cottage Therapeutic
Day Program, I would like to extend to each of you a warm seasons greetings
and a very blessed and healthy New Year.
Sincerely,
Mary R. Dame
Program Director
December 16 - Today's speaker was Doug Bassett, Vice President of Sales at Vaughn-Bassett
Furniture Co. He is also the spokesman for the Committee For Legal Trade that
filed an anti-dumping petition with the U.S. Government alleging that China
was illegally dumping bedroom furniture into the U.S. Market. This year long
investigation ended last week! Doug reported that the outcome of this investigation
was in favor of the U.S. Government. Fines were levied on China. Thank you Doug
for a very interesting look into the furniture industry and congratulations
on the success of your investigation.
