January 6 - Our speaker today was Jennifer Columbine, Assistant Director for the YMCA. Jennifer brought us a timely message about losing weight and getting back in shape after the holidays. Obesity in this country is out of control, especially in our children. 74% of our children, or 1 out of 5, are obese. She talked about our resting metabolism and how it affects our weight and energy. We need to increase our strength training to boost this metabolism. We cannot control our age or genetics but we can control our weight, activity level and metabolic rate.

January 13 - Our speaker today picked up where last week's speaker left off. Dixie Yow, Forsyth Medical Center, talked about Diet Myths. Dixie showed talked about "Eating Healthy for the New Year." It is never too late to take care of your body. Small changes make large differences. Losing weight is not about starving yourself but making better choices for a better lifestyle. Ms. Yow talked about the importance of more fiber in our diet (whole grains, beans & peas, fruits & vegetables) and less fat. She discussed the types of fats and the problems they cause. We should not eliminate all fats, just eat the right kind of fat. Studies have proven that three servings a day of low fat dairy products help to lose belly fat and lower blood pressure. Losing weight and being healthy is moderation, small portion and better choices. Make one change at a time and make it a lifetime change.
