UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS:

Invitations went out for our Valentine Special on Thursday, February 10, 2005. Please RSVP to Margaret by Tuesday, February 8 if you are bringing a spouse or guest. I will have a sign up sheet at the meeting this week. We will have a very special program.

We are continuing our Book Bag Program for Kimberely Park Elementary School. Please note on your Valentine invitation a list of school supplies that are needed. We will be filling 39 book bags this year. Each book bag will have all the supplies listed so we need 39 sets. The items needed are as follows: Scientific Fraction Calculator (please note that we need this specific kind of calculator), protractor, ruler, compass, pencils, glue sticks, colored pencils, colored markers (not crayons), pencil pouch, pack of sheet notebook paper, tab dividers, pocket folders (each bag needs 2), 1" notebook (each bag needs 2) and small packs of kleenex. Please bring as many of these supplies as you can. The book bags will be presented to the fifth graders who will be moving to middle school. It was very rewarding last year seeing the look on those children's faces when they realized that they had what they needed to start school this year. Let's do it again this year.

Rotary District Conference is in Charleston, SC this year from April 28 through May 1, 2005. The District Office sent each member information. If you register before February 21 the cost is $165, after February 21 is $195 and registration only with no meals is $50. Everyone is responsible for his or her own room reservations. Hotel information is included in your packet. Please contact Margaret if you do not receive a packet and you are interested in attending.

PROGRAM FEATURES............

January 20 - David Meyer spoke at our meeting today on the topic: Tuning Up Relationships: Family, Friends or Coworkers. David is a living example of what it means to focus on others and live a real life. He left a thriving architectural practice five years ago because he wanted more time really be with those he loved and to be in service to other people. His message inspired and challenged us to find out what is important, not to make assumptions, to get real, to listen with our hears, to be fully present, to learn from the past, to know that differences are healthy, and to make the most of every moment because it may be our last. Dave had high praise for Rotary and our Service Above Self initiatives. All who heard him greatly benefited from his presentation.

January 25 - Stratford Rotary met on Tuesday with the Winston-Salem Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce. Bob Northington representing the Chamber introduced the speaker, James Brinkley, Chair, Legg Mason Wood Walker, Inc. Mr. Brinkley started by thinking the group for being Rotarians - for representing what is good and right in America, and for representing the community. "Hard work, honest dealing, and putting the customer first" - his summary of the high probability for success for America.

For the remainder of the meeting Mr. Brinkley showed how historical events triggered investment success in this country. He gave three guides to investment success. First, understanding the success of probabilities - the fundamental law of life (and investments) is uncertain; second, resource asset and allocation, and third human behavior and human nature. He noted that many are "risk averse" and spend too much time worrying about the past. He quoted Warren Buffet - "be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful."

His life guide: Treat people the way they want to be; Be as good as you can be; Lift up people around you. We should be grateful to be in this country, in this community and offering others what we have to give.
