PROGRAM FEATURES............
March 3 - Our own Veronica Black brought us a very motivating message
today about "Self Awareness". Veronica said that 90% of our values and
morals are locked into place by age 10 and the other 1-% is locked in
by age 20. Babies are born with a blank tape as far as beliefs, values
and morals. Up to age 10 children have no control over their lives.
They are like sponges and they soak up what they see and hear and are
taught. Different people add stuff to our tapes. Parents add their
stuff to their children's tapes. Veronica talked about the different
people that mark our lives. We learn verbally, non-verbally and by
someone's tone. When we get older we can go back and examine the
things on our tapes and decide whether or not to keep them. Once we
reach 20 years old it usually takes a significant or traumatic event
in our lives to make a change. Thank you Veronica for a look into some
of the things that form who we are.
March 10 - Twana Wellman, Executive Director, ESR (Experiment in
Self-Reliance) spoke to us today. Ms. Wellman talked about the mission
of ESR, to empower people to become economically and socially
self-sufficient through developing skills, building assets, obtaining
education and housing, enhancing strengths, and overcoming barriers to
success. ESR stimulates community change to eliminate poverty and
homelessness through education, advocacy, and building economic and
social capital. The premise of ESR's umbrella Self-Sufficiency Program
is that, with appropriate planning, information, support and
accountability, almost everyone can achieve some level of economic
self-reliance. Delivered through intensive case management, the
program offers each ESR client the opportunity to custom-design his or
her own plan for achieving self-sufficiency. Areas addressed typically
include job improvement, wage progression, housing stability,
budgeting, vocational education, child care, transportation, and
counseling. Acceptance into the program is based upon a joint staff
evaluation. An individual's maximum stay in the program until
graduation is two years. ESR recently celebrated its 40th birthday.
Thank you Ms. Wellman for everything you and ESR do for our community
and its people.
