WHY YOUR BENEVOLENCE GIVING IS SO IMPORTANT………
Everyone will be receiving a personalized letter soon from President Bobby Sprinkle and Ed Robbins, Chairman of our Rotary Foundation Committee, giving everyone an update on where they stand with the Foundation regarding their contributions.  The letter will also explain why giving to our local benevolence and the Foundation is so important.  You will be given opportunities and choices as to how you would like to give.  The goal for our Club this year is 100% participation in our giving.  Our dollars do make a difference whether they stay at home or go abroad.

PROGRAM FEATURES............

September 22 – Dr. Andrew Brod, an economist from the Bryan School of Business and Economics at UNC-G brought us today’s program.  Strangely enough, he talked about, “Good News about High Oil Prices”.  Oil prices have risen from $30 per gallon a year and one-half ago to $65 per gallon today.  Dr. Brod said the era of cheap gas is over.  Gas prices are not rising due to government taxes, greedy oil companies, price-gouging retailer, or supply problems.  Gas prices are riding due to change in the shape of the demand for oil.  No new refineries have been built in the US in the last 30 years though oil demand is being driven by 4 out of 6 people on the planet.  However, rising oil prices is better than having a shortage of gas or long gas lines like we had in the 70’s.  As the world gets back to normal after the recent hurricanes, we will see difference in life style choices and companies will strive to be more efficient, and new sources of energy must be discovered.

September 29 – Today, Tom Guthrie, Plant Manager Duke Power Belews Creek Steam Station, brought us a talk and visual look at the Belews Creek Steam Station.  The statistics on the steam station are quite impressive.  Using a video Tom showed the inner workings of the plant and talked about how they have improved their efficiency.  Belews Creek burns 19,000 tons of coal per day.  It is the largest coal burning facility in the US and is rated #5 in the US.  It was quite fascinating to see how the train coal cars are literally turned upside down to empty.  Belews Creek strives to use every source available to them to make the plant more efficient.

October 7 – We had two delightful classification talks today.  Susan Raymer started in the corporate world working for Forrtune 500 companies.  Her job with Inmar was to attract and keep employees.  In her travels in larger cities, she found that companies provided a concierge services to its employees.  Susan started looking for that services here but could not find it.  In 1999 she and her partner started At Your Service Concierge Service. Today At Your Service is a two-sided company.  One side is a true concierge service providing with someone to pay bills, run errands, wait for a delivery, or take to appointments, etc.  The other side of the business is a home improvement referral service.  They research and recommend companies to their clients for such services as painting, remodeling, lawn care and other such service providers.  At Your Service takes the worry out of looking for someone who is insured and licensed for the job.  Lee Raymer, Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch, told us that he has been interested in financece since he was a little boy.  His grandfather introduced him to finance at a very early age.  When he was fourteen they sat down together and started a portfolio.  He wasn’t allowed to change anything.  They tracked its progress on paper every day until he went to college.  When he started tracking his portfolio on the internet he would call his grandfather and give him a daily update.  When his grandfather die (his junior year in college) they found volumes of daily stock quotes and meticulous recording keeping.  The love of his grandfather and his grandfather’s love for finance only confirmed that that was what Lee wanted to do with his future.  He has continued to use that love and common interest and values to work with his clients.  He prefers a kitchen table to a boardroom.
