ANNOUNCEMENTS, NEWS & INFORMATION................
DATES
TO REMEMBER:
February 9 – Valentine Luncheon
February 23 – Board Meeting
GIVE
YOUR SPOUSE OR FRIEND A TREAT………
Thursday, February 9 will be our Valentine Special. Bring your spouse or Friend
to lunch and enjoy a special program. Invite your guest now and put it on your
calendar. I will have sign up sheets at the meeting and you can also call 784-6276
and leave a message.
We will be collecting books again this year for Kimberly Park Elementary School.
The librarian at the school has indicated they need books for 9 to 11 year old
children, and specifically requested the following types of books: simple-concept
non-fiction books; sports books, simple biographies, joke/riddle books. The
school needs recreational reading books – books the children can read
for fun. The school cannot purchase these ‘fun’ books for children
with the grant money they receive so this is their greatest need. Please bring
new or used books to our Valentines lunch on February 9th.
LET’S
KEEP IT GOING………
Members are still coming forward and contributing or assigning their extra funds
to other members to help towards being a 100% Paul Harris Club. We really need
to have this completed by April to get everyone’s name and money in so
The Rotary Foundation will have time to get all the credit in for the year.
Please contact Margaret or President Bobby Sprinkle if you have any questions
about how much you need to complete your Paul Harris Fellow.
ABOUT OUR MEMBERS…….
Continue to remember Shari Covitz. Shari had extensive back surgery on Thursday,
January 5, 2006. I spoke with her today and she is doing much better. She thanks
everyone for their thoughts, prayers and cards. She hopes to be back in March.
BOARD
MEETING MINUTES…………
The Board met today. The minutes of the previous meeting and the financials
were approved as presented. A major item discussed was membership. All the previous
resignations along with new ones, Kathie Cooper, Bob Kulp and Don White were
accepted. The members that resigned had no problem with the Club, mostly they
were because of extensive business conflicts, moving and heavy traveling. We
need to look for new members. A leave of absence was approved for Shari Covitz
and Larry Gray.
A new member proposal was approved (check your emailed newsletter for information).
THE BEACH IS CALLING……
District Conference is April 20-23, 2006 at the Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort
at Grand Dunes. Anyone interested in going needs to let Margaret know. Registration
deadline is February 20, 2006.
PROGRAM FEATURES............
January 19 – Linda Brinson, Editorial Editor of the Winston-Salem Journal, spoke to us today. She talked about the newspaper in general and the role it has had and continues to play in the community. The Internet has actually made the paper more important because there is so much hype on the Internet. She discussed the purpose of editorials and how they are written. An editorial is an unsigned opinion. A column is the opinion of the writer. Thank you Linda for an interesting talk.
January 26 - For those of you that missed the meeting today, you missed a great program. Clinton Parker came and brought his honeybees and talked about their importance and Bee Venom Therapy. The honeybee is a very important insect. It is so important that it is considered the state insect. I couldn’t begin to tell you everything he told us about the live of the honeybee, but it was all very fascinating. He told us about the medicinal purposed of bee pollen and something called Popolis, which comes from inside the beehive. Mr. Parker talked about how Bee Venom Therapy works and the successes he has had treating people. Mr. Parker is a walking testimony to his business. He was at stage 4 cancer in 1995 and was told he had 3 weeks to live. He decided he had nothing to lose by letting his bees sting him in his cancer areas to try and numb himself and quiet his pain. After 44 weeks of getting stung 3 to 4 times a week. Mr. Parker discovered that the latest lump was gone. He called his doctors and they made x-rays and did blood work only to find that he was cancer free and he has remained so ever since. Mr. Parker is just a country beekeeper that found something natural that seems to be working for him as well as others. Thank you Mr. Parker for one of our best programs.
