MINUTES FROM THE BOARD……….Directors of the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro met with the Board and requested volunteers. For our club, they are asking us to sponsor Shotlinks at one hole during the tournament. Coverage will require approximately 30 people, which can be comprised of club members, spouses, friends, etc. The goal of the tournament is to make this a Triad event and will provide a good opportunity for publicity. The volunteer days will be October 4-8. There will be training on September 30 and a walkthrough “dress rehearsal” for each team. Proceeds from the tournament go to charities. The Board decided that we will participate as a sponsor of Hole 16. All volunteers are encouraged to attend the August 26 Volunteer Party.
President Jay informed the Board that his top priority this year is club membership. With Board input, Jay is designing a survey to learn more about member opinions and ideas. ANYONE INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING AT THE TOURNAMENT, CONTACT MARGARET OR JAY LUKE!

PROGRAM FEATURES............

July 20 – Timothy Davis, Professor of Law WFU, was our speaker today. While in Law School at SMU, he presented a case on a sports contract issue. After graduation from law school he went to work in big corporation law. He kept thinking about the sports case he presented. Sports contracts have become such a controversial issue with so many variables. The big issue now is whether or not student athletes should be compensated. He cited all the current rules and regulations against the issue vs. the arguments in favor of compensation. There are so many legal impediments to be considered that it doesn’t seem to be logical.

July 27 – Our own Nancy Johnston, Piedmont Triad Research Park, was our speaker today. Nancy brought us up to date on the Research Park. The state of North Carolina serves as a central point along the East Coast and was ranked #1 by Site Selection magazine for business climate. The Piedmont Triad is midway between New York and Miami; Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. Winston-Salem, the state’s fifth largest city, is home to the Piedmont Triad Research Park. The mission of the Park is to promote academic, industry, and government collaboration and increase growth in emerging and established businesses in biotechnology, regenerative medicine, pharmaceuticals, nanotechnology, nutrition, medical devices, imaging, and information technologies. The Piedmont once flourished in the manufacturing of tobacco, textiles, and furniture. The decline of these manufacturing sectors has seen the local government, businesses, non-profits and academic leaders joining to revitalize the economy led by technology through the community’s institutions of higher learning. Anchored in Winston-Salem’s historical downtown business district, The Research Park is a highly interactive, master-planned innovation community being developed to support life science, information technology, and design research that will ultimately transform the local and regional economy. The expanding park is being built around a new bio-medical campus for Wake Forest University Health Sciences that will create a nucleus of intellectual activity. The incredible transformation of the Park now underway – led by Wake Forest Health Sciences will create a 5.7 million gross square feet of developed space, reclaiming 200 acres of the city’s central core over the next thirty years. When the expansion is complete, the economic benefits could include as many as 31,000 jobs for area residents. Currently the park comprises buildings providing over 550,000 sq. ft. of wet lab, office, meeting and residential space; and is home to 15 life science, 11 information technology and 9 business services tenants. Collectively these 35 tenants employ 746 university and corporate personnel. The new building houses the world class Regenerative Medicine Institute led by Dr. Anthony Atala. Plans are underway for a Design Institute by Winston-Salem State University and the North Carolina School of the Arts to be located in the park. We are on our way to developing over time a world-class research and technology environment in a highly interactive, master-planned, urban community. This synergy can increase the quality and speed of technology development for Winston-Salem and the Piedmont Triad region. Our role and our responsibility are to lead our region toward a new technology based business economy.
