PROGRAM FEATURES............
August 3 - District Governor Mitzi Ellis brought us greetings from District 7690 and Rotary International. She thanked Bobby Sprinkle for a job well done this year and praised Stratford Rotary for successfully becoming a 100% Paul Harris Club. She also praised our website as one of the best in the district. Her message to Stratford Rotary focused on membership recruiting and how to attract and keep Rotary candidates. Ms. Ellis encouraged all Rotarians to develop, refine and practice our own personal “elevator speech” that can be delivered at a moment’s notice to convey to others what Rotary means to us and why it is important to us. Ms. Ellis recognized that each of our stories would be different – some might emphasize fellowship, service, fundraising, international involvement or business contacts while others would say Rotary provides “ordinary human beings extraordinary opportunities”. In closing, Ms. Ellis reminded us that we should try to identify good Rotarian candidates and tell them our Rotary stories, and she challenged us by asking whether we were ready to change a life. Ms. Ellis presented Paul Harris awards to members who were present. President Jay Luke thanked District governor Ellis for being with us today and presented her with a gift basket from the Club.

August 10 – New City Manager Lee Garrity spoke to us today. He talked about the accomplishments of the city of Winston-Salem citing that we should be proud of our city. He also talked about the challenges facing the city. Crime prevention is at the top of the list for the future. The city is working with the neighborhoods but they need our eyes and ears.
August 17 – Today was one of the most fascinating programs we have had. Robert Moody, Music Director of the Winston-Salem Symphony spoke to us today. His goal as music director is to change the perception of the Symphony and music awareness in the community and the schools. Music concentration and instrument playing are not offered until 4th grade. Mr. Moody would like to see this start in the 3rd grade. He started playing the cello in 4th grade and wound up majoring in music in college. Conducting is what he loves and it shows. He must know his music, “the score”, inside and out. He plays it over and over in his head until he can hear the music without the instruments actually playing. He said it’s almost like being telepathic. Not all conductors use a baton to conduct. Sometimes he uses one and sometimes he doesn’t. He uses a baton when he wants to emphasize certain parts of the music. Thank you Mr. Moody for a great program.
