ANNOUNCEMENTS, NEWS & INFORMATION................

DO YOU WANT TO ATTEND???....the Joint Meeting with The Chamber of Commerce and Winston-Salem Rotary is next Tuesday, August 7, 2007. The meeting starts at 11:30 and is being held at Embassy Suites in the Grand Pavilion Ballroom. YOU MUST HAVE RESERVATIONS!! Please call Margaret by Friday, August 3, 2007 to sign up.

Please answer the call……You may get a call from Annese Public Relations. The Board voted to have an independent survey to poll random members of the club to see how satisfied our members are and what suggestions they may have to improve our club. If you are chosen, please answer the questions honestly.

Do You Know Our Members?......... How well do you know the person that sits with you at the Rotary meetings? Sometimes there is not enough time to really get into a discussion with someone and find out about them. This year, President Jeff Clark is implementing several ways to get to know each other better. Following Past President Jay Luke’s lead, Jeff is continuing the after hours social gatherings. He is especially focusing on getting to know the new members, thus, calling the social the “Getting To Know Our New Members Social.” All members and spouses or guests are invited to come to Foothills Brewery on Wednesday evening 8-15-07 from 5:30 to 7:30 and visit and get to know each other. This gathering will not replace the lunch meeting on Thursday, 8-16-07. Our new members in the past year are: Mary Ann Lawrence, Vicky Leonard, Hayes Wauford, Tom Anderson, George Burns, Bob Grubbs, Margaret Poovey and Ken Wernick. If you can’t come to the gathering, remember these names and find one at a meeting and welcome them and introduce yourself. President Jeff is also having the person introducing the speaker each week to take two minutes and say something about his/herself. We will still have Classification Talks which will give a more in-depth description of yourself.

Please Remember…..Our own Jim Bunn who had hip replacement surgery two weeks ago. I apologize for not listing it sooner. I talked with Jim today and he is doing wonderful. He is back at work half days and looks forward to seeing everyone at Rotary.

Our Thoughts, Prayers and Sympathies go out to the family of Skip Prosser and the Wake forest family on his death. Mr. Prossee was the Head Basketball Coach at Wake Forest University, but he was more than just a coach. Coach Prosser was a friend and a mentor to everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

PROGRAM FEATURES............

July 19 – Our own Kevin Fussell presented a program on his Water Filtration Project in the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately I was not here to hear it but I have nothing but raves about the program as well as the project. This sounds like something Stratford Rotary can embrace and support. Thank you Kevin for your dedication and hard work on this project.

July 26 - Tim Grant, Director of Parks and Recreation, spoke to us today. Mr. Grant talked and showed a power point presentation about all the places in the city that his department is responsible for maintaining and all the events they sponsor, support and participate in. Along with being in charge of all mowing and landscaping in the city of Winston-Salem, his department also maintains all the city parks including signs and creek banks, was innovative and thrifty enough to take old fire hydrants and make new water foundations for some of our parks, plants trees for the Memory Tree Program and Roots Day, is in charge of a Family Field Day at the Fairgrounds (with health screening), Special Olympics, Snappy Tappers (senior tap dancers), has a city Easter Egg Hunt, a Dodgeball Group, Flag Football, has Fall Festivals for Halloween at 17 Recreational and Community Centers, runs the Josh Howard and Chris Paul Basketball Camps, the NFL Football Camp, Peace Toys for Wars Toys Program, helps with the Soap Box Derby, Camp Discovery, Art in the Park (which is August 12, 2007), the Senior Games, installed chess tables downtown and is in charge of the Christmas Tree Lighting at Corpening Plaza every year and this is just to list a few. I was amazed at how many things the Parks and Recreation Department does for our city. Thank you Mr. Grant for your dedication to the City of Winston-Salem.
