District Governor McCoy grew up ice skating in suburban Philadelphia and sailing at the south Jersey shore but when he came south to college, he was hooked on North Carolina. At Catawba College he received a degree in Business Administration and met the love of his life, Linda. They were married a week after graduation and have been married for over 40 years. He returned to Philadelphia to be part of a family business, but the song of the south was too strong. They moved to High Point in 1976. Dave is an independent textile sales agent, primarily to the furniture industry. The McCoys have two adult daughters and two granddaughters. The Mcoys are very active in their community and have had many leadership roles. In recent years Dave’s main focus has been Rotary. He joined the Rotary Club of High Point in 1986, and has 21 years of perfect attendance. He served as President in 2000-2001 and has served the district in many other capacities. PROGRAM FEATURES............
September 6 – Mayor Allen Joines spoke to us today. Mayor Joines has truly represented the interest of the city of Winston-Salem. He talked about how the city has grown and the many new businesses that have come to our area and how they have improved our economy. Our Center for Design Innovation is a magnet for other companies. Fed-Ex is coming and Honda Jet too. We were named one of the hottest areas in the country by Site Selection Magazine, were listed as one of the top ten digital cities, one of the top ten most wired cities, downtown has 1000 new residents in condos on Fourth Street with four 1,000,000 condos of which two have already been sold. He talked about the new baseball stadium coming. Overall, the Mayor feels good about where we are but there is a lot more to do.
September 13 – Our speaker today, Lee French, was introduced by Jimmy Hoots as “Mayor” of Old Salem. His interests in history, artifacts, preservation of landmarkers of our past, and education led him to Old Salem. The Moravian story is really an immigrant story – non-english speaking people seeking a new place to live. When they settled they documented all about their life, etc. which left rich records with which to preserve their history. The Old Salem entity consists of 90 acres, 5 retail stores, museums, educational opportunities plus a rich heritage which tells many stories of the past. Lee has a plan to involve all of us as a community to share in the story of Old Salem.
