SOMETHING NEW IS HAPPENING…..our Holiday Social will not be at Forsyth Country Club this year. Our own Linda Combs has graciously voluntered her home to host our social this year. Be watching for an invitation and more information later. Keep the date, December 6, 2007, open to attend this great event.

FROM THE DISTRICT…..The Rotary Foundation Banquet is November 8 at High Point Country Club. Speaker is Past RI President Frank Devlyn. There will be a cash bar at 6:30 and dinner at 7:00. The cost will be $30 per person and the Club will pay for anyone who wants to attend. Please let Margaret know as soon as possible if you plan to attend.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK…..about our the new weekly newsletter on the tables. In our efforts to keep you better informed, we are placing a weekly newsletter on the tables each week and a list of upcoming programs. So as not to overdo things, we will try only sending the email bulletin once a month. We will try to have at least six weeks of programs listed, so, hang on to the email bulletin if you aren’t going to attend the weekly meetings.

SPEAKING OF NOT ATTENDING WEEKLY MEETINGS…..our attendance has been declining and we want it to improve. The members responsible for our programs have been working hard and have lined up great programs and President Jeff Clark and the Board have been dedicated to finding ways to get new members, increase attendance and get the Club more involved. Are you doing your part?

THE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY ARE IN……and you the members have spoken. You told us what you thought about our club and what could make it better. Our own Rachel Barron will talk to us on November 8 and tell us what you thought. If you are interested in what other members think please come to the meeting.

PROGRAM FEATURES............

October 4 – It was great to welcome back our own Linda Combs today. Linda has been in Washington, D.C. for the past 6 years serving her country. She just retired as the Comptroller of the United States. Linda’s topic today was “Saying yes to service” which is exactly what she has done her whole life. Linda was in education for 11 years then she and husband Dave Combs started a music catalogue service. She went to Washington and worked under 3 Presidents in Federal Government Auditing and Financial Reporting. Linda has been the CFO of CFO’s of the United States. She worked with our own Ken Wernick, an Ethics Officer. She and Ken both used the Rotary four-Way Test in their daily life. Linda talked about some of the situations she encountered and the achievements she had. She said to read something new every day, say yes to service and we will accomplish something greater than ourselves. Linda has exemplified what it means to be a Rotarian and has definitely lived “Service Above Self”.

October 11 – John Larson, an Archeologist Historian from Old Salem, told us about “Idol’s Dam: The Past, Present, and Future of an Industrial Marvel”. Along the banks of the Yadkin River, stands a building worn by time, but not forgotten. Under the shadow of a monumental truss bridge stands an icon of the industrial age, Idol’s Hydroelectric Generating Power Station. Despite the ravages of time, memory has yet to forget this place. It is our obligation to make sure it never does. Idol’s Hydroelectric Station, built during the summer of 1897 by the Fries Manufacturing and Power Company, opened on April 18, 1898. As the first commercial hydroelectric generating station in North Carolina, Idol’s Dam proved instrumental in the development of Winston-Salem as an industrial and manufacturing center. Not only did it stand out as an engineering and i8ndustrial achievement, but it also served as a catalyst for progress. It supplied the power for local textile and fertilizer mills, the electric railway, electric street lights and for wood and metal working shops. Thomas Edison wan an investor in the Idol’s Power Station. He attended the opening of Winston’s electric streetcar system in 1890. Mr. Larson described how the Hydroelectric Generating Station was constructed. The station was shut down in 1950 when Winston-Salem began pumping water from the municipal water works station on the Yadkin River. A fire in 1998 destroyed the wooden components and mechanical systems of Idol’s Power Station. Mr. Larson talked the plans to preserve what is left of Idol’s Power Station.
