January 3 - Today we had Classification Talks by Hayes Wauford and Perry Clark. Perry grew up in this area and graduated from Reynolds High School and then received a Business Degree from UNCC. He married his high school sweetheart Kim and has 3 boys 13, 10 and 7 years old. He worked for Computer Credit, Inc for 5 years in a sales role and them worked for Alliance Display for 11 years in Sales and Sales Management. He moved to Sparta, NJ in 1999 and lived there for 8 years, then moved back to Winston-Salem in December 2006. He bought American Speedy Printing in March 2007 and NewSouth Printing in June 2007 then merged the two companies and changed the name to Allegra Print and Imaging. Allegra is a Communications company that works with customers to promote their brands and image through printing, Digital copying, mailing services, large format signs and banners, In-house design capabilities and promotional products.. Perry and his wife Kelli are involved with Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on a National and local level. Their youngest son Wells was diagnosed with this life threatening disease 7 years ago when he was only 2 weeks old. They are the chairpersons for this year’s Great Strides event being held in April at Tanglewood Park. Perry likes coaching his sons’ ball teams, golf and skiing.
Hayes was an only child also born and raised in Winston-Salem. He attended Summit School, Reynolds High School, and NC State University. He graduated from NC State in 2005 and has been working with his grandfather, Clay Ring, at Wilson-Covington Construction Company full-time since then. He began working there after school while in high school and enjoyed it so much that he knew that it was where he wanted to be after college. He helps manage 1600 apartment units, 3 shopping centers, and various other commercial spaces in Winston-Salem and Greensboro. The company also does new commercial construction, commercial uplifts, residential remodels, and historic restoration work. He is especially proud of the work they have done in Old Salem. He acts as an estimator and project manager, as well as being involved in oversight of the property management work. He considers it a blessing to be able to be with his grandfather every day. He is engaged to Amy Gregory, who is also a native of Winston-Salem, and they will be married April 19, 2008. In his time away from work he enjoys hunting and fishing and is a competitive skeet shooter. He won his first World Championship this past October in San Antonio. He represents Krieghoff International, Kolar Arms, and a clothing company called Mountain Khakis in his shooting competitions. He loves traveling to skeet shoots in the summer and getting to meet and know people from all over the country. He also spends a lot of time with his family as they are all in Winston-Salem.
January 10 – Patrick Eakes, Area Representative for The Rotary Foundation, talked to us today about the Foundation. Patrick told us that The Rotary Foundation is our own Foundation. It is 100% run by Rotarians and all decisions are made by Rotarians. If you give $1.00 to the Foundation, the whole dollar goes to the programs. When we make donations to the Foundation, 60% of those funds are returned to our own District 7690. He discussed the inflow and outflow of the Foundation and described the different funds and how they are used. The Annual Fund acts as the operating fund for the Foundation. There is an endowment fund that is invested and the money made is distributed to the other funds. Patrick talked about the different types of grants and how to go about getting them. There are several types of scholarship programs, Cultural, Ambassadorial, and Peace Fellows. The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship program is the world’s largest privately funded international scholarship program. The purpose of the scholarship program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. In addition to being an investment in the education of tomorrow’s leaders, Rotary foundation scholarships create personal links between countries and are an important step toward greater understanding and goodwill in the world. Speaking of the world, The Rotary Foundation’s Polio Plus program has eradicated 350,000 cases of polio in the world but the work is not done. There are several countries where there are still reported cases. We need to eradicate them and put polio in the same closed box with small pox. Our dollars do make a difference.
Of the things we thing, say, and do…
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
