January 31 – Our speaker today was Eric Kerchner, Director of The Children’s Museum and our newest member. Eric talked about how road to the Children’s Museum. His father traveled so he didn’t see him much. They took a fishing trip every year but one year it rained the whole time. His father read to him the whole day and made the characters come to life, he always remembered that day. When he was going off to boarding school his father gave him the poem The Road Less Traveled and told him to own it. These events in his life opened up a whole new world of literature and acting. He was delighted when the opportunity to be the Director of The Children’s Museum was offered to him. He knows what reading and sharing can do for a child. He talked about the museum and what it offers. Schools can have field trips and the school can call ahead and ask for a particular theme and they will set up crafts and stories. The museum is also opened to the public and there are special events and story times. The museum needs the community support.
February 7 – What a momentous day today was. Stratford Rotary had its first meeting at Kimberly Park Elementary School and the response was overwhelming. We had 40 Stratford Rotarians in attendance today. The school rolled out the red carpet for us. While we enjoyed a wonderful meal catered by The Golden Apple, some of the teachers and students gave us a small rendering of what is being learned at the school and the talents of the students and staff. The Brownie Troop let us in the Pledge of Allegiance and a trio of teachers sang The Star Spangled Banner (awesome). Several groups representing Kindergarten through Fifth grade entertained us with recitations, dance interpretation and cultural dance. Everyone was quite impressed with these young children. After the children finished with their presentations, Principal Sheila Gorham talked about the goals and mission of the school and how they are working to help the children grow and learn and to improve the school’s scorecard. At the close of the meeting, President Jeff stated that Kimberly Park’s scorecard is now Stratford Rotary’s scorecard. We already have several members involved in after school tutoring and the rewards are far greater than we ever thought. Won’t you get involved?
Of the things we thing, say, and do…
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
