ANNOUNCEMENTS, NEWS & INFORMATION................

MARCH is LITERACY MONTH……How appropriate for our current focuses! Our work is continuing at Kimberly Park Elementary School. We had several members who participated in Read Across America on Dr. Suess Day and several who are involved with the tutoring program. The school Step Team is coming to our meeting on March 27 to perform for us. We will be having our April 24, 2008 meeting at Kimberly Park. The next Book Fair is coming up in April and we will be looking for members to help just like we did in the Fall. Kimberly Park Book Bag Sponsors Needed.

Our book bag program has been very appreciated by the students and parents over the past few years and we are continuing it again this year. However, we are doing it a little differently. We are asking members to sponsor a book bag(s). The cost is $50 to sponsor one book bag. If you can sponsor more than one that is great. We will then use these dollars to purchase the book bags and supplies. The book bags will be presented to the graduating fifth graders who will be starting middle school in the fall. Please contact Susan Raymer about sponsoring a book bag. Graduation is at 12pm on June 4 at the school. We would like to have a larger representation by our club this year on graduation day so keep this date in mind.

FROM LEARNING TO READ TO COLLEGE…..Our Scholarship Committee will be meeting soon to select our scholarship winners for this year. Students may obtain an application from their guidance counselor. The Stratford Rotary Scholarship is up to $2,500 and is given to deserving students with a minimum 2.8 QPA. We have given as few as one and as many as six scholarships. If you would like more details on how the students are selected you may call Chairman Tom Battle.

If you know students that need a scholarship and don’t qualify for the Rotary Scholarship, read the article below.

Scholarships at The Winston-Salem Foundation: Application Deadline - March 31

Do you know of a local student who needs help paying for college? The Winston-Salem Foundation offers both need-based and merit-based scholarships - over $880,000 in student aid grants and loans were awarded in the 2007-2008 school year.

To make it even easier for students and families, all information is available online at www.wsfoundation.org. But time is of the essence - the new student aid application deadline is March 31. Help spread the word throughout our community!

PROGRAM FEATURES............

March 7 - Thanks to Timothy Janke, JD, State Program Director, Private Equity Initiatives, Small Business and Technology Development Center, UNC Chapel Hill, for talking to us today. He said that innovation may be one of the last and best cards that America holds. Innovation spawns good ideas but requires capital. He talked about the Angels Program and explained how it works. He said that education and experience is the best way to succeed. He talked about the NC Capital Highway and the US Capital Highway

March 13 – Our speaker today was Cathy Howe, Director Member Services and Marketing, Pinebrook Country Club. Ms. Howe gave us an overview of Pinebrook describing it as a Family orientated facility. She talked about how Pinebrook started. Their crown jewel is their golf course. Although Pinebrook is a private club, they allow people outside the club to play golf there. The course was designed in 1954 by Ellis Maples. Thank you Ms.Howe for your informative talk.

Dear Stratford Rotarians,

Writing this letter is probably one of the hardest things I have ever done. It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that I have decided to retire. I started with Stratford Rotary in April 1991 and have enjoyed every minute I have spent with you and have made many lasting friendships. My retirement will not be immediate since I have agreed to work for a year with whoever takes my place, making my projected retirement June 2009.

The Board felt I needed to inform you now so you can help me look for someone to take my place. If you know anyone who might be interested please have them call me.

Sincerely,

Margaret Warren

ROTARY FOUR WAY TEST:

Of the things we thing, say, and do…
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
