ANNOUNCEMENTS, NEWS & INFORMATION………………

MARK YOUR CALENDARS……….The invitations for the Holiday Social will be in the mail soon, but go ahead and mark your calendars for Thursday, December 4, 2008. I hope everyone can attend. We always have a great time. The social will be at Forsyth Country Club this year.

RING THE BELLS……..It’s that time of year again. Stratford Rotary is signed up to ring the bells on Saturday, December 13, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We need people for the 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 slots. I will have the list at the meetings or you can call Margaret at 784-8667 to sign up.

IF YOU THINK YOU CAN’T HELP – THINK AGAIN……. Our Kimberly Park classroom holiday parties this year are on Tuesday, December 16 and Wednesday, December 17. Parties both days will start at 1pm and will last one hour. We’ll need to arrive a little early and then do a quick cleanup after the parties. If you can work both days that would be great.

We need 2 to 3 Rotary volunteers per classroom to facilitate the parties. If you volunteered last year you know how much fun this was and if you missed last year we hope you can make it this year.

We will have snacks for the children and are planning a holiday craft activity. We will also give each child a book. You do not need to bring anything; we will have everything at the school ahead of time.

Please contact Mary McCandless (mary@prismbiz.com) to sign up.

November 6 – Mary Jo “M.J.” Busa, a 50-year-old protocol analyst for the Wake Forest University of Medicine, talked to us today about her second career, professional motorcycle racing, which she started at age 44. She said the “need for speed” must be in her genes. Her father started racing cars at age 38. He was the oldest and winningest road racer. He died in 1987 doing what he loved most in St. Petersburg. M.J. dabbled in cars but didn’t want to have to live to her father’s reputation. Most of the people she races with and against are men. Most of the racers walk the walk, talk the talk, and dress the part and have all the latest bells and whistles on their bikes. M.J. doesn’t dress the part or have all the accessories on her bike, but she managed to win the championship last year. You have to have passion to race motorcycles. She described the feeling you get when flying around the curves. This is not a cheap sport but it is a dangerous one. Last year M.J. had a bad accident. She managed to get herself off the track. While she was waiting for help, her husband (her teammate) flew by her and kept going. Even after her accident, she can’t wait to get back on the track. That is real passion.

November 13 - Today we had Mike Rowand, Director of Advanced Customer Technologies for Duke Energy, speak to us about electric transportation and brought along the latest plug-in hybrid vehicle. This hybrid uses a lithium-ion battery instead of the nickel-metal hydride currently used. The newer technology allows you to plug in to the 110-volt outlet in your home’s electric supply. Fully charging the vehicle takes around 4 hours at a cost of about $.50 making the vehicle extremely fuel efficient and reducing our dependence on foreign and domestic petroleum products and leaves our environment cleaner to boot! The gasoline engine assists running the vehicle when the battery wears down to a one-third charge and maintains that level until you can charge it fully again. This allows you to get close to 100 miles per gallon. Charging can take place during the night when costs and demand for electricity are lower. Electricity can be derived from a diverse fuel mix such as wind, hydro, and solar power. Electric motors allow for better torque capabilities so 0-60 on an electric motorcycle happens in 1 second. No need to worry about a fast start to maneuver away from a hazard. Cheaper, cleaner, made in the USA and fueled in your garage. Maybe not the Jetson’s yet, but a lot closer than we think!

ROTARY FOUR WAY TEST:

Of the things we thing, say, and do…
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
