Mayor Allen Joines received his B.S. from Appalachian State University and his M.P.A. from the University of Georgia. In 1971 he began his career in Winston-Salem as Assistant to the City Manager. Subsequent promotions were to Director of Evaluation, Public Safety Coordinator, the Director of Development and Deputy City Manager. Mayor Joines has a new position. Along with his mayoral duties, he has been chosen to be the Chairman of Economic Development for the N.C. Department of Commerce.
This 37 member board is responsible for providing economic and community development planning for the state,
recommends economic development policy to the Secretary of Commerce, the General Assembly and the governor, recommends annually to the governor biennial and annual appropriations for economic development programs and develops and updates annually a comprehensive strategic economic development plan.
Mayor Joines plans to keep the city of Winston-Salem in the forefront and push our strategic plan for development
forward with his new role. He will have a voice in the matter of planning comprehensive strategies for our state. The Mayor wants to keep pace with similar sized cities. Growth is getting slower, down to 1.8% a year. We will need 30,000 net new jobs in the next 12-13 years and by 2030 we will have gone from the 10th largest state to the 7th largest state. This growth will pose both opportunities and challenges for retail and for infrastructure. The push is towards a knowledge based economy. We still have a very strong manufacturing base.
The questions we need to ask to build the future of the city of Winston-Salem are:
Is the idea unique enough for our area
Is it feasible
Is it impactful enough for 30,000 new jobs
There is a plan currently being put together that answers these important questions. It’s under wraps for now while intellectual property rights are looked into to make sure that the idea stays here and doesn’t get pirated to another city or state. We should hear more about it in July or August.

A good time was had by all at our annual Spring Social on May 28th.
This years Rotarian of the Year award went to Dr. Kevin Fussell for all of his hard work and dedication to providing clean water to the Bateyes in the southwestern portion of the Dominican Republic. He started this project on his own and it has grown to include the help of a gentleman from Atlanta with the same goal in mind. Since Kevin is currently a Paul Harris Fellow the club has decided to contribute $1000.00 to the project. Kevin is making clean water and dreams of a better life a reality for the Bateye of the Dominican Republic. We wish him continued success.
Margaret Warren was honored for her 18 years of service to the club as executive secretary. Past Presidents Dick Barron, Ed Robbins, Loy McGill and Bobbie Sprinkle all recollected times that Margaret’s talents shown as an organizer, friend and dedicated record keeper for the club. A special gift from the former presidents of the club was presented to Margaret with the hope that she could use it to take one of the many trips that she and her husband Butch enjoy. President Ellen Coble then presented several gifts that are sure to be keepsakes of Margaret’s years with the club including a throw pillow with the Rotary wheel hotset onto it, a rotary charm/pendant and a lavender colored Jackson and Perkins rosebush with a lovely citrus scent named "Sweetness". Congratulations Margaret, enjoy your retirement!
