PROGRAMS

Dr. Amber Baker brought along the Accelerated Reader group from Kimberley Park Elementary School to our meeting. Susan Raymer mentioned that 115 books were read by the students. Dr. Baker explained to us the impact that Stratford Rotary Club is having on the test scores so far. Although the scores are in the preliminary stages advances are being seen over last year’s tests. There is much ground yet to be covered but progress IS being made.

The club members that read and tutor the Kimberley Park students are making a difference that can be measured in more than just numbers on a chart. The students look forward to their time with our volunteers and for many this is the only time that they spend one-on-one with an adult in a fun, relaxed, learning environment. Dr. Baker mentioned that Hayes and Amy Wauford have devoted an extraordinary amount of time to the students. In fact, Amy’s student was the TOP Accelerated Reader of the group! It is by example that children learn and what a wonderful example Stratford Rotary and its Kimberley Park volunteers are. Dr. Baker said it’s “the best kept secret in Winston-Salem.”

The meeting ended with a Power Point presentation of our volunteers in action set to the music of gospel singer Kurt Franklin singing “Imagine Me”.

Dr. Kevin Fussel, our Rotarian of the Year, gave us an update on the water project that he has spearheaded in the Dominican Republic. You can watch the video at the following link on youtube that he showed to us at the meeting.

“In February, the World Water Relief team accompanied 25 medical professionals on an annual mission trip to the Dominican Republic. With assistance from the Stratford Rotary of Winston-Salem NC, and Rotary International, they installed a new water filtration system in Batey 7 to provide clean water to this 2,500 person rural village - the first free, clean water the bateyeros ever had.”
